About This Spot

Milícias is the go-to beach break on São Miguel's south coast and one of the most consistent beaches on this side of the island. Located near São Roque, just minutes from Ponta Delgada, the beach stretches in a wide arc of black volcanic sand with multiple peaks that shift with swell and tide, offering lefts and rights with distinct personalities along the shoreline. What sets Milícias apart from other south coast beach breaks is its ability to produce waves with real quality: when south swell arrives with adequate size and period, the peaks become hollow, fast and surprisingly tubular for a sandy bottom.

The ideal swell arrives from the south and offshore winds blow from the north to northeast, cleaning the face and allowing quality sessions. Low to mid tide are the best windows, when the sandbars define the peaks more clearly and the wave gains better shape and power. Consistency is notable for the south coast, picking up swell more regularly than most spots on this side, although it remains more dependent on south swell windows than the north coast breaks. The proximity to Ponta Delgada ensures easy access, parking and services nearby, including surf shops and restaurants.

Despite being a sandy beach break, Milícias can catch unprepared surfers off guard. When the swell picks up size, the wave becomes hollow and powerful, with closeouts that punish poor positioning and heavy shorebreak on entry. Crowds are moderate and tend to increase on good days, especially at weekends, but the length of the beach and the number of peaks usually allow you to find space. For surfers of all levels, Milícias delivers fun, accessible waves on smaller days and demanding, intense sessions when the South Atlantic decides to show its strength.
