About This Spot

Fajã do Araújo is arguably the most tubular, long and powerful wave on the entire island of São Miguel. Hidden on the easternmost tip of the island near the municipality of Nordeste, this left-hand point break peels over a pebble and volcanic rock bottom with a steepness and force that surprise even surfers accustomed to heavy waves. The takeoff is vertical and demanding, followed by fast, tubular sections that reward perfect positioning and punish any hesitation. When west to northwest swell arrives with enough size and period, Fajã do Araújo transforms into one of the most impressive peaks in the Azores, capable of producing waves between three and four metres with a quality that rivals internationally renowned spots

The spot works best on W to NW swell with NW wind, which helps keep the wave face clean and organised. Low tide is the ideal window, when the bottom becomes more exposed and the wave gains definition and speed. However, the very same conditions that make the wave spectacular also make it dangerous: the proximity of rocks, currents that intensify with larger swell and the raw force of the breaking wave make this one of the riskiest spots on São Miguel. Entry and exit are through the rocks on the inside, which demands experience and composure.

Consistency is limited because the spot needs a specific combination of swell, wind and tide to work at its best. This means good days are rare, but when they happen they are memorable. The geographic isolation of Nordeste keeps the crowd at virtually zero, and it is common to have the wave entirely to yourself. For experienced and professional surfers looking for a raw, authentic surf experience in the Azores, far from the better-known beaches, Fajã do Araújo is a pilgrimage worth every kilometre of the winding road to get there.
